Last week at the Chicago International Auto Show, BMW Motorsport revealed their new 2009 M3 race car. The car will be run by Rahal-Letterman Racing in the 2009 American Le Mans Series (ALMS).

When you're buying a Lotus, you don't want to be driving it in the city. Sitting in traffic jams, praying for temporary lights to stay green ("please don't change!"), and avoiding potholes and speed bumps is hardly fun. No, a Lotus is meant for the open road - the wide, open, twisty roads of the British countryside where the only hold up is when you pull over to admire the view.

I don't pretend to know much about cars, but I know what I like and I like Lotus cars. They're sexy, fast, fun to drive and you're guaranteed to turn heads when you're driving one, and isn't that what driving is all about? The model I like in particular is the Lotus Exige S. Ok, so it's not the easiest of cars to get into, but once you mastered the art of that it's actually a very comfortable ride. There's not buckets of space inside the cabin, but this isn't a car you'd take on a camping trip - this car was made for driving. The Lotus Exige S is an absolute joy to drive along twisty roads; it has excellent cornering abilities and exceptional grip. With the ability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds, the Lotus Exige S isn't for the faint-hearted. However, it isn't as 'cash guzzling' as you might think, you can get around 200 miles out of one tank of petrol, which isn't too bad, and you can rest assured that the rev-hungry Toyota engine is reliable.

One of my favourite places to drive is in the south-west of England, particularly Devon and Dorset where the roads are clear of traffic and the views are simply stunning. Maybe one day I'll drive my new Lotus Exige S in Dorset, but for now I'll have to stick with my trusty Ford Fiesta.

New VW Officially Announces R GmbH Performance Subsidiary

 

 

Volkswagen has officially launched the new R GmbH performance subsidiary.
Meant to meet the “increased global demand for individualized vehicles with contemporary sportiness and exclusivity”, the subsidiary will handle sales and development of high performance and Exclusive (aka Individual) models. In essence, R GmbH is Volkswagen’s answer to BMW’s M and Mercedes’ AMG divisions.
Described as the “specialist for sporty exclusive models from Volkswagen in the future,” R GmbH has already taken responsibility for the Scirocco R, the Golf R, the R-Line design packages, and the aforementioned Exclusive range.
Based in Warmenau, Germany (near VW’s Wolfsburg headquarters) R GmbH employs a staff of more than 350 people. In the future, the subsidiary promises to intensely the sportiness of Volkswagen R models.

Novitec Rosso Takes Ferrari California Up to 606 PS

 

The Ferrari California has had its power boosted and its performance systems improved again by tuner Novitec Rosso. A previous programme took the car up to 368kW (500mhp). From the factory the 2+2-seater’s 8-cylinder motor develops 338 kW (453 bhp / 460 PS) and 485 Nm (358 lb-ft).
Technical highlights include the use of a mechanical supercharger, a custom intake manifold and larger injectors as well as a water-to-air intercooler. A Novitec Rosso stainless-steel high-performance exhaust system with sport catalysts was installed and the ECU remapped.
The baby Ferrari now boasts 446 kW (598 bhp / 606 PS) developed at 7,900 rpm. Maximum torque goes up to 603 Nm (445 lb-ft) at 5,500rpm. The 0 – 100 km/h sprint takes just under 3.8 seconds and top speed is 325 km/h (202 mph).
Some of the suspension work includes sport springs that can be lowered by 35 millimeters and a hydraulic lift system that can raise the front of the car by 40 millimeters for better navigation of everyday obstacles like speed bumps.
Aerodynamic and styling changes include new rocker panels with integrated airfoils and black side markers, a rear diffuser, rear spoiler lip and carbon fibre rear molding. Wheels are 9Jx21 size in front and 11.5Jx22 at the rear, shod with 255/30 ZR 21 and 315/25 ZR 22 Pirelli tyres respectively.

2011 Simbol Design Sports Cars Lavazza GTX-R The New Super Sports Cars

 

Italian brands The Lavazza GT-R unveiled, Simbol Design has some pictures and specifications for the new super sports car. Simbol Design has created this impressive new V12 supercar producing 620 hp while weighing a mere 2380 lbs. This gives the car an exceptional power to weight ratio of 3.8 lb.

Lavazza GTX-R body made of carbon-Kevlar built atop a tubular steel frame. And since German powerplants have emerged as the new crate engine of choice for niche manufacturers from Spyker and Wiesmann to Gumpert and Pagani, the Lavazza packs a BMW-sourced 5.4-liter V12, picking up Lamborghini's tractor-origins mantle with an electro-pneumatic transmission reportedly sourced from a bus. Sources differ on the engine's output – alternately claiming 489 horsepower or 620 – but either way, 0-60 mph times quoted around the four-and-a-half second sound conservative.

The carbon monocoque holds the engine plus the passenger cell, while the polished aluminum panelling is enhanced by reflections in the sculpted bodywork. Interestingly, the rawness of the materials even more strongly highlights the dual character of this car: performance power coupled with cruising comfort, structure and body, dark and light.

The only exclusive Audi-tuner from Germany, PPI Automotive Design GmbH, breaks through the Audi-tuning arena yet again, and presents their new limited production Supercar, the PPI RAZOR GTR-10. The Audi specialist turned its focus on optimising the power-to-weight ratio of the Audi R8 while simultaneously strengthening the motor, increasing performance, improving handling dynamics, and managing to reduce the weight of the Audi R8. The end result is a culmination of knowledge from the past year in research and development to create a truly inspired production car; the RAZOR GTR-10. This vehicle will be available to only 10 select individuals.

One of Britain's largest insurance companies is paying through its teeth as an insurance claim for one luxury sports car has come in at a record-breaking (for the company at least) £300,000. The car in question is the Pagani Zonda S which is a £500,000 two seater luxury sports car.

The Pagani Zonda S was badly damaged by a clearly inexperienced driver who lost control of it on a test run on a country lane near Glasgow. The collision ended leaving the face of the Pagani Zonda S in a poll and a fence.

The car insurance company question is Aviva and they have decided that the car is not beyond repair so have decided to have it shipped back to Modena, Italy where only 10 Pagani Zonda S’ are made in a year. Materials such as titanium and aluminium are used in this luxury sports car and Aviva said in a statement: "It's the biggest repairs payout we've seen."

Luxury Car Sales Finally Drop in North America

 

Luxury auto brands, which until recently had been outperforming the rest of the U.S. market, have started to sag. Many people had thought high-end Italian sports cars would remain as invulnerable to the economic downturn as Hamptons real estate and Louis Vuitton bags, but that's beginning to change. To some extent, the higher you go in the luxury spectrum, the stronger the market remains, but even ultraluxurious brands—such as Bentley, which is down 27.9% this year—are showing vulnerability. And "mass luxury" brands, such as Mercedes-Benz (DAI), Porsche (PSHG), and Toyota's (TM) Lexus division, have seen some of the greatest drop-offs in sales, especially with their most expensive models.

That's because North American sales the past few years were artificially inflated by the housing boom and access to easy credit. As more Americans fooled themselves into thinking they were richer than they were, luxury automakers raised their production capacity and sales targets and enjoyed boom years. Customers who could never have afforded such cars as the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, the Porsche 911, or the Lexus LS, found that carmakers, banks, and dealers were happy to toss them the car keys. Now, for those who were borrowing against the ever-increasing value of their homes or planning to spend their fat Wall Street bonuses, the drive is over.

The Biome is made from BioFibre, a material that’s significantly lighter – the concept weighs 875 lbs, well short of the competition’s 1,000-pound limit - than either plastic or metal yet supposedly is stronger than steel.
The basis for the Biome Concept is a vehicle that “grows in a completely organic environment from seeds sown in a nursery. It’s all natural, all organic and all science fiction.

 

 

According to Mercedes-Benz, the Biome uses what is called the Symbiosis system. In this process the vehicle acts like leaves on a tree — collecting solar energy to power the vehicle. The BioNectar4535 powers the Biome where it is housed in the vehicles chassis, interior, and wheels.

The first generation Acura TL had standard features including dual airbags, antilock brakes, automatic climate control, a cassette/CD player sound system, and power windows and locks. Leather was standard on the more upscale 3.2 TL, while the 2.5 TL featured a firmer suspension setup.

The first third-generation Acura TL rolled off the assembly line on September 30, 2003. On October 6, 2003, the third generation Acura TL (the 3.2 moniker was dropped) was released for sale in North America. Developed mainly in the United States by a team led by Erik Berkman with bodywork by American Honda designer Jon Ikeda, the new TL was built in Marysville, Ohio, and was derived from the 7th generation US-market Honda Accord. It is powered by a 270 hp (201 kW); later revised to 258 hp (192 kW), based on the new SAE measurement standard for horsepower and 233 lb·ft (316 N·m) of torque, 3.2 L 24 valve SOHC VTEC V6 engine mated to either a 5-speed automatic with SportShift or 6-speed manual. Manual transmission models featured Brembo 4-Piston front brake calipers, a Torsen-type limited slip differential, and stiffer anti-roll bars front and rear.
As of March 2004, Honda offers to the public a factory-sanctioned “tuner package” version of the TL called the TL A-SPEC. This version features a suspension tuned by Makoto Tamamura, an indication of the TL A-SPEC’s aggressive engineering. In addition, an underbody kit, spoiler, limited edition A-SPEC steering wheel, “A-SPEC” badge on the back, and 18-inch (460 mm) wheels are standard issue on the A-SPEC package. When installed at purchase, the car’s 4 year/ 50,000 miles (80,000 km) warranty applies to the package as well. From 2004-2005 the base TL was also offered with a 6-speed manual as a no-cost option that also included Brembo brakes and performance tires at no cost.
The third generation TL was also the first car in the American market to include a 6-disc DVD-Audio system, output through an 8-speaker 225-watt system, engineered by Panasonic and tuned by Grammy-award winning Elliot Scheiner. The system also plays back regular audio CDs as well as DTS audio discs, CD-Audio, CD-Rs and CD-RWs but not MP3s. All models were also equipped with a Bluetooth HandsFree Link (HFL) system, integrated with the audio system, to allow for hands-free usage of one’s cell phone (provided the phone also supports Bluetooth and is compatible with the HFL’s hands-free profile). The driver can simply voice-dial the number and carry the entire conversation over the car’s built-in audio system; when receiving a phone call a display will show caller ID if it is supported by the phone. The driver also has the capability to transfer current calls between the car and the cell phone. There is also a phone book which can store personal phone numbers within the car’s memory. With the built-in XM Radio tuner, owners can elect to pay a monthly subscription after the complimentary 3 months subscription expires from Acura for XM radio, which provides over 100 digital channels via satellite.

 The Honda Zeppelin Concept created by Myung Jin Jung was designed to be a luxury sedan. Getting its inspiration from airships, the exterior combines conventional styling of luxury sedans with the styling of airships. A very distinctive design feature is a line that runs all the way from the hood, to the roofline, and finally till the rear. Interior combines the luxury of sedans with the finesse of first class air travel. The front seats can swivel 180 degrees to face the rear seats when the car goes into the “Entertainment Mode.

2011 Ford Mustang

 

It would be reasonable to expect that Ford might pass over the Mustang and instead devote more attention to its other models since it's fresh off a comprehensive revamp for the 2010 model year. However, that's not what is shaping up in the House That Henry Built.

Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

 

The Ferrari 612 Scaglietti is Ferrari's Grand Touring sports car. With a hefty price tag, the legendary car maker designs the Scaglietti for the Italian auto enthusiast who enjoys performance, comfort, and class.
